Akin to a scientific self-study, Field Notes depicts my observations on my solo journey through Mexico, using the lens as a tool for self-discovery.
On one level, Field Notes was a physical voyage, an exploration of a foreign country and of new photographic techniques. But this journey became much more. Captured between photographs of the Mexican landscape and architecture I found a series of symbolic self-portraits. Whilst discovering a new terrain in this country I was also unknowingly exploring the landscape of myself.
Sources of tension in my life, un-probed emotions, and my fears and shadows of past experiences are revealed through the subjects I was subconsciously drawn to photograph, as if an exercise in finding and piecing together the different parts of myself.
